Drawing from His Love

Drawing from His Love

A Devotional by Melody Crosby Hale

Key Scripture

John 4:14 NIV, “but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.  Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Life has a way of draining us dry unless we’ve learned what well to draw from.

It was too painful to be around others because of the stares, the whispers, and the disapproving gestures. So, she went alone to draw water from the well in the hottest part of the day to avoid people.  But He (Jesus) was already there waiting for her, and He asked her for a drink of water.

She knew she had a questionable reputation, and she couldn't understand why He was asking her for a drink of water unless, of course, He wanted something from her.

She couldn’t see that He was holding space for her and had just invited himself into her world to taste what was in her cup. She couldn’t see past her pain.

Instead, she noted to Him that He did not have anything to draw with and that the well was deep. It was her way of saying, “You don’t want to get involved with me because my life is too messed up, and you definitely do not want to drink from the same cup that I have to drink from.

But He was there, not to take from her but for her to draw from Him, “but whoever drinks the water I (Jesus) give them will never thirst.  Indeed, the water I give them will become IN THEM a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14 NIV).  He is that well of endless life and unconditional love.  We no longer need to draw from anything other than Him and to drink from His continuous flow of life that now lives within us.

Jesus was offering her His life, a well that never runs dry.

As He was creating space for her, she was learning to draw from Him:

~She was no longer sugar-coating her life.

~She was no longer hiding behind her pain.

~She was no longer denying the facts.

~She was no longer allowing fear to silence her.

When she left the well, she returned not to drink from it, but to bring others to Him so they could draw from His life as well.

Reflection Question

Will we continue to draw from wells that run dry or invite the One who is love into those dry places of our lives?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for meeting with us just as we are and teaching us to draw from Your love no matter the condition of our lives.  We believe that your Spirit lives in us and is our continuous flow of power and life that quenches our thirsty thoughts, emotions, and will. We believe that life flows into us from Your presence as we continue to meet with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
