Generosity That Outlives You
A Devotional by Sonya R. Storey
Key Scripture
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3 (ESV)
What if abundance has less to do with what we have and more to do with what we are willing to give?
We often associate abundance with having more money, possessions, opportunities, and success. But true abundance isn't measured by what fills our hands; it's measured by what flows from our hearts. Everything we have is a gift from God, and each of us has something to give. We have time, experiences, gifts, stories, and love. We can encourage, serve, listen, forgive, and show kindness. Abundance says, “I have been given much, and I have something to give.”
Generosity is about far more than money. Sometimes the most generous thing we can offer is our attention. It may look like listening when someone needs to talk, encouraging a weary mother, welcoming someone to our table, forgiving an offense, or speaking words of life to someone who has forgotten her worth. Generosity isn't simply something we do; it's how we live.
Yet generosity doesn't always come naturally. When we continually focus on our circumstances, disappointments, and unanswered questions, we can lose sight of what we already have to offer. I know this because I have experienced it. But something changes when I turn my attention outward. Gratitude reminds me of what God has given me, while generosity reminds me that I have something to give. Both shift my focus from what I lack to what I can pour out.
In the late 1990s, as we began building our family, I started thinking more deeply about the life I wanted to cultivate. I had dreams and goals, but I realized life was about more than accomplishments. I wanted to love my family well, invest in people, serve God faithfully, and leave something behind that pointed others toward Him.
Then, in 2021, that desire became more personal. I was sitting beside my precious daddy in his final moments before he entered the gates of Heaven. As I watched someone I loved deeply approach the end of his earthly life, one question became impossible to ignore: What will I do with the time I have left?
That question has stayed with me. The older I get, the more I understand that our days are a gift, not a guarantee. This truth isn't meant to frighten us; it's meant to awaken us to live intentionally.
We don't need a bigger platform, a fuller bank account, or more free time to begin living generously. We can plant a seed of encouragement, nurture a neglected relationship, share our resources, extend grace, or use our experiences to comfort someone walking a difficult road.
We may never know the full impact of our generosity. But every act of love, every word of encouragement, and every moment spent serving others can leave a lasting mark.
What will you do with the time you have left? Start today. Give what you have, love the people before you, and live in a way that makes a difference. Because a generous life can leave a legacy that outlives us.
Reflection Question
What has God placed in your hands today that you can generously give to someone else? Don't wait for the perfect opportunity or another season of life. Plant the seed today.
Prayer
Father, thank You for every good gift. Help me use my time wisely and faithfully share what You have entrusted to me. Teach me to plant seeds of kindness, generosity, love, and faith wherever You lead. Amen.
