The Accuser Has Been Defeated
A Devotional by Mary Skyler
KEY SCRIPTURE
“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Romans 8:1 (NIV)
DEVOTIONAL
She sits quietly in Sunday school, surrounded by people who seem to have it all together. Or so she thinks. She keeps her mouth shut, careful not to reveal too much, because surely if people really knew her story—the mistakes, the wounds, the shame—they would see her as disqualified.
Maybe that woman is you.
Maybe you know the voice that whispers: “Who do you think you are? You will never be enough. You’ve done too much. Too much has been done to you.”
But that voice does not come from your Father.
Romans 8:1 reminds us that for those in Christ, condemnation no longer has authority. When Jesus declared, “It is finished,” He proclaimed that sin’s debt had been fully paid. The accuser’s case against you was permanently dismantled at the cross.
This does not mean we are beyond conviction. The Holy Spirit lovingly calls us toward obedience, growth, and repentance. But conviction draws us closer to God, while condemnation attempts to bury us in shame.
Friend, your past is not your identity. Because Christ fulfilled what you never could, you are no longer defined by failure, trauma, or brokenness—you are defined by His righteousness.
You are deeply known. You are fully loved. You are still called.
When the lies return this week, answer them with truth: “There is now no condemnation for me in Christ Jesus.” Repeat it until shame loses its grip and your heart remembers what heaven has already declared.
The accuser may still speak, but his authority is gone.
In Christ, you are free.
REFLECTION QUESTION
What lie has condemnation been repeating in your life, and what would it look like to replace it with God’s truth today?
PRAYER
Father, thank You that through Jesus, condemnation no longer defines me. Help me recognize the difference between shame and your loving conviction. Teach me to walk in the truth of who You say I am—fully forgiven, deeply loved, and called according to Your purpose. Amen.
